Amber Cove / Dominican Republic

Amber Cove / Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has long been one of the established travel destinations in the Caribbean region. The 48.730 square kilometer island state shares the Antilles island of Hispaniola with the country of Haiti.

The Dominican Republic is not only popular with millions of beach vacationers; Many cruise companies also use four of the country's ports as start and finish ports or attractive stopover destinations for cruise ships.

In the south of the country are the two well-known cruise destinations Santo Domingo and La Romana. The destinations in the north of the island are the scenic region of the Samaná Peninsula and the Amber Cove cruise port, which opened in autumn 2015. The facility, located in the west of the large city of Puerto Plata, is a private port owned by Carnival Corporation. Not just ships of the brand Carnival, but also from subsidiaries such as AIDA Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line etc. regularly visit the resort, which was built for 85 million US dollars.

The “Terminal Turistica Amber Cove” was built in the remote, horseshoe-shaped bay of Maimón next to two RIU hotels & resorts. The terminal facilities can accommodate two cruise ships at the same time. They are so powerful that ships the size of the Queen Mary 2 can be created there and taken care of.

The Carnival Group is pursuing the same strategy with regard to Amber Cove that Carnival and competitors have previously successfully implemented with other private resorts in the Caribbean region: a resort is being built in a remote area that is only accessible to ship guests. Small, uninhabited islands are best suited for this purpose and are enriched with restaurants, bars, shops and a range of beach activities such as water sports or stingray petting.

If, as in the case of Amber Cove, it is a land resort, it is surrounded by a solid fence and guarded by security guards. This makes individual excursions more difficult. Guests are usually forced to consume in the resort and/or use the shipping companies' expensive tour offers.

However, it should be noted that Carnival has put a lot of effort into Amber Cove. A small test site with 22 buildings was built on a huge, green area. The houses of the “village” represent the main periods of colonization of the island. They were built in Victorian, Colonial and Fortaleza styles.

The focus of the resort is shopping experiences, dining options, relaxation and water sports. The complex includes a welcome center, shops, bars, restaurants and an aqua park with pools, artificial river and cabanas. There is also a 200 meter long zip line. – At Amber Cove Resort, no one is in danger of breaking out into the world in to come into contact with the system at all if this is not expressly requested.

A generously sized, shaded check-in area for buses and taxis awaits those ship guests who have booked organized tours. With regard to taxis, it should be noted that the fixed prices quoted by the “Amber Cove Taxi Association” are significantly higher than the prices of “free” taxis. For the additional price you will be transported by uniformly dressed drivers in well-kept white vehicles.

In comparison to the “official” taxis, the “free” taxis wait outside the facility. They are significantly cheaper, but the vehicles don't look as proper and the drivers don't wear uniform clothing. They are not allowed to enter the area to pick up and drop off their passengers. Apart from that, they also do a good job.

Guests who appreciate individual excursions should visit the city of Puerto Plata, twelve kilometers away and with a population of around 2022 according to the 147.000 census. The city has long had a good reputation as a holiday destination. It also offers enough sights for a day's stay. See also for more information One day in Puerto Plata.
