Cape Liberty

Cape Liberty Cruise TerminalTo say it in advance, the cruise port Cape Liberty in Bayonne / New Jersey cannot convince us of the optics. Seen from the inside and outside, the port area presents itself as a desolate area of container cranes, containers, trucks, mobile cranes, old warehouses, a water tank and huge piles of junk ready for loading. The residential buildings in the hinterland and the handsome clubhouse of the Bayonne Golf Club hardly cover up the wasteland.

How to get to Bayonne For example by plane. To the west of the port area is Newark Liberty International Airport, which is served by JFK in New York and Germany. We don't even have to talk about the other transport routes. The region is very well developed in terms of transport.

The Port Authority's website states that in the 1930s, a group of investors dumped an artificial peninsula 430 acres in size, or 174 hectares, in order to use it for commercial purposes. With the beginning of World War II, the War Ministry and the Navy Ministry were also interested in this area, which seemed to offer multiple uses. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and America's entry into the war, a naval base with supply depots and dry docks for aircraft carriers and battleships was built on the peninsula. Up to 2 warships could be supplied on the site at the same time.

Changing areas of responsibility ensured the continued existence of the military base until the end of the 1990s. The facility was officially closed on September 23.09.1999, 2003. In December XNUMX, the conversion agency established to rededicate the base and Royal Caribbean announced a cruise port in Bayonne, the Cape Liberty Cruise Portwant to establish. The official slogan is: "Your Closest Point To Sea". Since then, only ships of the Royal Caribbean Group have been using the port as a starting point for tours to the Caribbean, Bermuda and for trips to the East of England and Canada. A modern terminal building was opened at the end of 2014.

More ships were added. Also the group company Celebrity Cruises lets some of their cruise ships call at the port. The port authority Cape Liberty puts the number of travelers in 2015 at more than 320.000.

In addition to the maritime activities, the American film industry found what they were looking for on the site. Several films immortalized the harbor on celluloid. As a result, film companies discovered Bayonne as a production location. This development continues.

The great plus of Cape Liberty is its close proximity to New York. From the cruise ship you can already enjoy the wonderful view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Downtown Manhattan with the new World Trade Center behind it.

The easiest way to get to downtown Manhattan / New York is by taking the ferry NY Waterway or by car via Jersey City through the Holland tunnel. The ferry trip with the dressers and fast ships is about 10 km away. It takes about 20 minutes. Compared to the Holland Tunnel, it is pure pleasure as the spectacular New York skyline is in view all the time.
