Dutchman Jan van Reebeck founded the city in 1652 on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. In this way, the company created a base for supplying merchant ships heading for destinations in India. The original inhabitants of the Cape region at that time were Bushmen and pastoral peoples. The Dutch ruled the country for almost 150 years. After the economic collapse of the Dutch East India Company, the British occupied the Cape Peninsula in 1814 and made it their crown colony. Their status ended in 1910 with the formation of the Union of South Africa. The subsequent racial segregation in Cape Town led to a separation into “white” and “black” residential areas. The townships came into being. Along with Pretoria and Bloemfontein, Cape Town is one of the country's three capital cities.
