Saranda – where is the city and what makes it special?
Saranda is located in southern Albania in a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay. The surrounding hills not only provide a picturesque backdrop but also a mild Mediterranean climate. Saranda is particularly popular with holidaymakers from all over Europe, as the city is easily accessible by ferry from Corfu – ideal for day trips or a combined island and mainland vacation.

History of Saranda – ancient roots and Byzantine evidence
The origins of Saranda date back to ancient times. At that time, the city was known as “Onchesmos" and served as an important port in ancient Epirus. One of the cultural highlights is the Synagogue of Saranda, dating back to the 5th century AD. The well-preserved mosaics are an impressive testament to Jewish life in late antiquity and can be viewed in the city center.

Around 20.000 people live permanently in Saranda. The number of residents increases sharply during the summer months – primarily due to tourists, cruise ship passengers, and seasonal workers. The population is predominantly Albanian, but there are also Greek minorities in the surrounding area.
Economy in Saranda – Tourism as a driving force
Saranda's economy is now primarily based on tourism. Numerous hotels, vacation apartments, restaurants, and cafés benefit from the increasing number of visitors. The real estate market in Albania, especially in Saranda, is also growing: more and more foreigners are investing in vacation properties with sea views. Other sources of income include fishing, agriculture, and services related to transportation and tourism.

Education, schools and study opportunities in Saranda
Saranda has several secondary schools, including high schools and vocational schools. There is currently no university of its own, but the University of Gjirokastra occasionally offers degree programs in cooperation with Saranda. Many students commute to Tirana, Vlora, or Gjirokastra.

More than 60 cruise ships fly their flags off Saranda every year. The tender boat dock is located right in the city center – perfect for shore excursions, beach visits, or trips to the top sights. We'll also describe the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Butrint, located just 20 kilometers away. In Butrint National Park, visitors will find an archaeological site nestled among olive trees with Greek, Roman, medieval, and Ottoman remains.
