Celebrity Cruises builds sixth Edge-class ship

Celebrity Cruises builds sixth Edge-class ship

January 22, 2025 – The Celebrity Cruises, a premium cruise line owned by Royal Caribbean Group, has commissioned another Edge-class cruise ship from the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique.

It is the sixth ship in the Edge class. Figures for the new build are not yet available. Edge class cruise ships were originally 306 meters long and had a gross tonnage of approximately 131.000. Over time they have grown. The current units are 327 meters long and have a gross tonnage of 141.000. The purchase price is around one billion US dollars.

One of the distinctive features of these ships is the so-called Magic Carpet. This is a free-floating platform on the starboard side of the ship. During the day it is used as a bar and lounge area at the level of the resort deck. In the evening it serves as an extension of a specialty restaurant floating freely above the sea. The Magic Carpet is also used as a tender lounge.

The Edge class ships are also known for their Infinite Veranda cabins. This type of cabin has an interior balcony with a floor-to-ceiling, glazed front. The windows can be lowered at the touch of a button and converted into a balcony.

Celebrity Cruises promises that they will retain the main features of the ship class and make room for other innovations. The new ship will also use methanol-compatible engines.
