October 28, 2020 - Economic action meanswith the means available to create the best possible results. This thesis is confirmed by the results of a study by the Kiel Institute for Tourism and Pool Research in Northern Europe currently presented by ROSTOCK PORT. The researchers determine the income attributable to cruise passengers in Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the amount of 43,3 million euros.
Oceania Nautica in the port of Rostock-Warnemünde
In 2018, 206 cruise lines visited the cruise port Rostock Warnemunde. This year, the number of calls to 196 ships has decreased slightly. According to the study, surveys of the passengers and crew members revealed the following individual spending behavior of the arrivals per capita and day:
- Shore excursionists or transit passengers 43 euros
- Travel change passengers 58 euros
- Crew members on shore leave 55 euros.
For passengers switching trips, additional costs for accommodation and parking fees must be expected. The passengers and crew alone spent 29 million euros in the city and region. In addition, there were costs to be paid locally for the ship operation (provisions, fuel, pilots, brokers and port fees). This cost had a further 17 million euros. The year 2019 saw fewer ship calls and lower income. The bottom line is that there are no bad numbers for the city of Rostock (209.000 inhabitants) and the structurally weak state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Jens A. Scharner, managing director of the port operator ROSTOCK PORT, comes to the following assessment: “The cruise ship in our port is not only a national and international trademark for Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but also ensures considerable added value. The investments such as the construction of another passenger terminal, a shore power system to supply ships at berths P7 and P8 as well as the renovation of the Warnemünde train station including a walkway at ground level will help to improve traffic flows and further increase the attractiveness of the Rostock-Warnemünde cruise port ". Why else should a municipality offer itself as a location for commercial enterprises? An overview of the cruises from Rostock Warnemünde is available here.
