May 7, 2025 – It took five weeks to prepare nicko cruises' only ocean-going vessel, VASCO DA GAMA, for the future. The 219-meter-long cruise ship was launched by Holland America Line as the "Statendam" in January 1993. Subsequent measures have already been implemented that have had a positive impact on the ship's sustainability..
With extensive technical modernizations and comprehensive investments, the Stuttgart-based cruise company nicko cruises wants to prove that new ships are not the only ones that make an effective contribution to environmental and climate protection at sea.
A contemporary modernization measure was the installation of a high-voltage shore power system, which enables the ship to operate completely emission-free while in port. CO₂ and pollutant emissions are effectively reduced in ports with shore power available during layovers.

Starting in 2025, EU authorities will require the gradual use of renewable and low-CO₂ fuels in maritime transport. For this reason, a biofuel blending plant has been installed. In addition, a new power management system now ensures optimized load distribution of the onboard power generators, which should lead to significant energy savings. An additional cyclone converter regulates particularly efficient operation of the electric motors.
The ship's hull was coated with a special silicone paint. This not only reduces marine growth and thus fuel consumption, but also completely eliminates environmentally harmful toxins.
Thanks to an upgrade, the catalytic converters will emit fewer pollutants in the future. To improve the ship's maneuverability, the bow and stern thrusters and steering systems were optimized. Even the lifeboats, their suspensions, as well as the anchor and anchor chain, were inspected.
During the shipyard stay, the focus was not only on the ship's technology but also on guest comfort. On Deck 5, all bathrooms were fitted with modern, walk-in showers. The air conditioning system was improved, and the stabilizers will ensure the ship's stability in rough seas. Further improvements were made to the galley, ventilation systems, and laundry technology.
