September 09, 2024 – On September 5, 2024, the AIDAprima, a cruise ship in the AIDA fleet, was refueled for the first time with 100 percent renewable biofuel (BMF100) in the port of Rotterdam as part of a pilot project. The innovative biofuel is based entirely on advanced waste and residue streams and, according to the provider VARO Energy, is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85 percent compared to conventional fossil fuels.

Sustainable test operation for the future of shipping
As part of the project, comprehensive tests will show how the biofuel performs in regular ship operations. "Our focus is on the question of how we can further advance the decarbonization of shipping. Since 2022, we have been gathering valuable experience with various biofuels," explains Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA CruisesHe stressed that a growing supply of alternative fuels that are globally available and marketable is crucial for a sustainable impact.
After refueling in Rotterdam The biofuel will be tested in regular operation on the upcoming AIDAprima voyages from Hamburg, including through the Norwegian fjords.
VARO Energy: Pioneer in the provision of biofuels
VARO Energy, the innovative company behind biofuel delivery, has developed a variety of biofuels for shipping since 2019. “We are pleased AIDAprima with a high-quality biofuel and to support our customers in the shipping industry on their path to decarbonization," said Sacha Konan, Country President of VARO Energy.
AIDA Cruises: Pioneer in alternative fuels
AIDA Cruises is increasingly relying on the use of so-called second-generation biofuels, which are made from organic waste and residues. These enable a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85 percent and can be used without major changes to the ship's engines or tank infrastructure. This is part of AIDA Cruises' long-term strategy to drive forward the decarbonization of the fleet. In addition to biofuels, the company also relies on liquefied natural gas (LNG), shore power and battery systems to make the operation of its ships more sustainable.
As part of Carnival Corporation & plc, AIDA Cruises has set itself the goal of achieving net-zero emissions in ship operations by 2050.
