November 18, 2021 | Start of construction for the fourth ship in the Edge class from Celebrity Cruises - the Celebrity Ascent will set sail in early 2023.
Yesterday, the steel cutting of Celebrity Cruises' latest construction project took place in the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. At the same time the name of the new ship was announced: Celebrity Ascent. From today's perspective, it will be put into service in early 2023. After the Edge, the Apex and the Beyond, it is the fourth ship in the award-winning Edge class from Celebrity Cruises.
The ceremony at which the first piece of steel with the outline of the Celebrity Ascent was cut in the shipyard's laser center, marks another chapter of an eventful year for Celebrity Cruises. On June 26 of this year, the Celebrity Edge was the first ship to leave a US port after the pandemic break. On June 19 of this year, the Celebrity Apex, the second ship in the Edge series, was officially put into service. The maiden voyage started in Athens. In the course of the year, further details about the third ship in the Edge series were presented: According to current plans, the Celebrity Beyond will set sail from the end of April 2022.
Celebrity Ascent steel cut
“The name of the new ship (ascent = Aufstieg) is very appropriate because the cruise industry is just beginning to recover. But also because Celebrity Cruises leads the industry as a new luxury brand, "said Richard Fain, Chairman and CEO of the Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Celebrity Cruises, adding:" Celebrity Ascent will take the industry to new heights , because this ship will offer the guests completely new experiences on board. "
“What another wonderful moment for our brand, our company and our industry to make the traditional first steel cut for a new great ship,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises. "Even if I would like to give you more details, I can promise one thing: Our 'Ascent' will be the sister ship of the Celebrity Beyond in every respect and will even surpass it," continued Lutoff-Perlo.
“This is a momentous event and a new milestone in the long track record that we have with Celebrity Cruises and the Royal Caribbean Group,” says Laurent Castaing, General Manager of the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard, adding: “Celebrity was at the front line advancing the industry on multiple levels and it is a privilege to work with and contribute as we bring Celebrity Ascent to life.
