Celebrity Cruises will rely on flex fuel engines in the future

March 29, 2023 – Together with the Finnish engine builder Wärtsilä Marine Power, the premium cruise company Celebrity Cruises is developing so-called flex-fuel engines for the fifth ship in the Edge class. This new engine technology is capable of to use “green” methanol alongside other fuels.

The "footprint" of environmentally harmful exhaust gases generated by cruise ships has been massively criticized by environmentalists. Although cruise ships only make up a tiny proportion of ocean-going ships, responsible shipping companies are looking for solutions. Turning away from environmentally harmful heavy fuel oil to less harmful marine diesel was a first step. Research is being carried out into fuel cell technology as a solution for the future. An intermediate step towards more sustainable and emission-free cruises are flex-fuel engines. Such engines are used in the fifth ship of the innovative Edge class.

Celebrity Cruises is one of the few cruise lines that has committed itself to using "green" methanol as an environmentally friendly fuel. The company is using the technology of the engine builder Wärtsilä to build the fifth ship in the Edge class. In order to ensure the fuel flexibility of the new building project, Wärtsilä is supplying converted 8- and 12-cylinder engines. This ensures that the ship can use three sources of fuel, including methanol. On the one hand, the modifications to the engines promote carbon-free cruises, on the other hand, the technology leads to a significant reduction in local emissions such as sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter.

It has been reported that methanol has emerged as one of the most promising candidates for future-proof, CO2-neutral fuels for ships. The move is in line with Celebrity Cruises' goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Celebrity Cruises is one of five cruise brands owned by the global cruise company Royal Caribbean Group (RCL). The Royal Caribbean Group holds a 50 percent stake in TUI Cruises.
