Costa Crociere receives second LNG ship with Costa Toscana

December 2, 2021 | Costa Crociere took over its new flagship, Costa Toscana, from Meyer Werft in Turku today. It is another liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered cruise ship from the Costa Group. The ship with more than 2.600 cabins was built by the MEYER TURKU shipyard in Finland.

The Costa Group, which belongs to the Carnival Group, stands for the brands Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises. Costa was the first cruise line in the world to fuel ships with liquefied natural gas. With the AIDAnova and the Costa Smeralda, the company is already using two LNG cruise ships. In addition, there is the Costa Toscana, which was taken over today, and the AIDACosma, which will soon go into service.

LNG is a crucial step in improving the environmental performance of cruise ships. The use of LNG completely eliminates sulfur oxide emissions (zero emissions), produces little particulate matter (95-100% reduction) and reduces nitrogen oxide emissions (direct reduction of 85%). The CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 20%. According to his own admission, Costa is working on the “net zero emissions ship”.

Costa describes the Costa Toscana as a "Smart City" when traveling. In addition to LNG technology, the ship also has a number of technological innovations that reduce the environmental impact of ship operations. Desalination plants work on board to obtain drinking water from seawater. Energy consumption is reduced to a minimum thanks to an intelligent energy efficiency system. In addition, materials such as plastic, paper, glass and aluminum are 100 percent collected separately and recycled. The driftwood with which the new Archipelago restaurants are decorated was collected as part of the largest Italian civil protection program "Guardians of the Coast", funded by the Costa Crociere Foundation.

The Costa Toscana pays homage to Tuscany. The aim of the design is to express the best of this Italian region on board. The furniture, lighting, fabrics and accessories are "Made in Italy". 15 partners designed the equipment especially for Costa Toscana.

The ship offers its guests every comfort, 21 restaurants and more than 2.600 comfortable and elegant cabins. The entire interior perfectly reflects Italian style and taste. The "Terrace over the Sea" cabin category has a spacious outdoor area where guests can have breakfast, drink an aperitif or enjoy the view.
