September 15, 2023 - Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH (CGH), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hamburg Port Authority Anstalt under public law, was named “Destination of the Year” at Seatrade Europe.
The award is a remarkable recognition for the operating company of the four Hamburg cruise terminals (Altona, Steinwerder, Baakenhöft and, from 2025, HafenCity). At the same time, it is a milestone for the entire cruise industry Hamburg. The award recognizes the commitment and success of the CGH in developing Hamburg into a year-round cruise destination. The Hanseatic city is experiencing an impressive boom as a cruise destination after the pandemic. The diverse range of cruise routes and travel options, not least in the winter months, reflect the city's attractiveness for cruise lines and their passengers. The constantly increasing number of passengers is proof of this thesis.
Hamburg is leading the way in the area of sustainable development of cruises, and especially when it comes to shore power. From 2025, the location will be one of the first ports in Europe to offer a shore power supply made from 100 percent renewable energy for cruise ships and container ships at all permanent berths. Emissions are significantly reduced during the berth by using shore power connections. The Cruise Center Altona's shore power system has existed since 2016. The shore power system at the Cruise Center Steinwerder will be put into operation by the end of 2023. With the opening of the new terminal at the HafenCity Cruise Center planned for spring 2025, the shore power infrastructure will go into operation there. At this point, all Hamburg cruise terminals are capable of shore power. Dr. Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economic Affairs and Innovation, said in her welcoming speech: “Hamburg is a pioneer in Europe when it comes to supplying cruise ships with electricity from renewable energies.”
The Seatrade Cruise Awards were presented for the first time in 2007. They are recognition for outstanding achievements and innovations in various areas of cruising. Internationally, they serve as benchmarks for excellence and innovation in the industry. The 17th edition of the award ceremony took place on September 6, 2023 as part of Seatrade Europe in Hamburg. Seatrade Europe is one of the world's leading trade fairs for the cruise industry.
