Cruise ship Costa Toscana - construction has started

July 31, 2019 - Yesterday, the first steel cut for the new Costa Toscana ship was carried out at the Finnish Meyer Turku shipyard. It is the second of the new eco-friendly cruise lines on the Costa Crociere.TheSister ship Costa Smeralda will start service on October 20th. The completion of the Costa Toscana is expected in October 2021.

Costa Toscana is the second of the new, environmentally friendly cruise ships from the Costa Crociere shipping company. You and the Costa Smeralda are each measured at 185.000 GT and 334 meters long. The number of cabins is put at 2.661. With double occupancy, this corresponds to 5.322 passengers. Both ships run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) both in port and at sea. Liquefied natural gas is a much cleaner fuel than heavy oil or marine diesel. LNG almost completely reduces sulfur dioxide emissions (zero emissions). Particulate matter is broken down by 95 to 100 percent, and nitrogen oxide emissions are 85 percent lower. The CO2-Emissions are reduced by 20 percent. Much remains to be done as regards the availability of the gas bunker infrastructure. A smooth transition to LNG is by no means guaranteed for cruise ships.

The two new buildings are Italy's ambassadors at sea. They are named after two of the most beautiful and popular regions in the country. We mean Tuscany and the Costa Smeralda, Sardinia's coastal strip. On the Costa Smeralda, all decks and public spaces are named after Italian locations and cult places and designed according to their model. As usual at Costa, the food and wine selection on board will be shaped by Italian culinary traditions.

Costa Smeralda debuts on October 20, 2019 with a 15-day cruise from Hamburg to Savona. Two-day stopovers will be made in Rotterdam, Lisbon, Barcelona and Marseille. The ship will be christened on November 3rd in Savona. Until April 2021, the new building will tour the western Mediterranean on week-long cruises in Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Civitavecchia and La Spezia. The cruise program of the Costa Toscana can be booked immediately.
