March 23, 2019 - On the way from Tromsø to Stavanger today the Viking Sky of Viking Ocean Cruises got into distress in bad weather. One of the two main engines failed in the difficult sea area off Romsdal. The ship was being driven towards land. However, the anchors could be dropped and the ship's position stabilized. The ship's command decided that the passengers should be evacuated.
According to the Norwegian police, the Viking Sky ship's command sent an emergency signal at around 14pm The ship is exposed to very high waves in stormy weather. Apparently it is not fully maneuverable because of an engine failure. Five helicopters and several ships are involved in evacuating the approximately 00 passengers. The rescue was complicated. There have already been several ship accidents at the position of the wrecked cruise ship. However, it appears that the situation has currently stabilized.

The Viking Sky sails for Viking Ocean Cruises, the offshore division of Viking River Cruises. The luxury cruise ship, measured at 47.842 GT, was christened on June 22, 2017.
