Germany and other European countries are suspending debt repayment for cruise ships

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) takes a position on the situation of the cruise lines and the shipyard industry: “With the outbreak of the Corona crisis, the cruise business came to a standstill. Shipping companies around the world have almost ceased operations. The sudden deterioration in the profit situation of the shipping companies is having a negative effect on the European shipbuilders and their order books. There is a risk that ship orders will be canceled and investments in new builds postponed due to a lack of liquidity. This would have fatal consequences for thousands of employees - both in the European shipbuilding industry and in the numerous supplier companies ”.

COVID-19 crisis could cost cruise industry $ 1 billion in April

The forced shutdown of cruise companies could generate immense costs. The generally well-connected New York online portal Cruise Industry News estimates that the more than 400 lay-up cruise ships cause one billion costs in April alone. The assessment is based on a “hot layup scenario”. In other words: The cruise ships are in principle ready for use at any time. The nautical staff (deck and machine crew) as well as the almost complete hotel crew remain on board.

According to the portal, Carnival estimates its own downtime costs at two to three million US dollars per ship per month. With nine brands and more than 100 ships, it is a huge effort. Experts assume that Carnival is able to achieve certain savings due to the company's size. Other, smaller cruise lines may not be able to do this.

Analysts expect that individual ships will only be able to gradually resume service in the 3rd quarter of 2020. The costs for the ships laid up without employment will continue to arise over several months.

Phoenix Reisen: MS Amera guests collect money for the crew

At the traditional Phoenix farewell morning pint, a call for donations for the Crew Welfare Fund was launched. In addition, there was an auction with memorabilia from this unusual trip. Various items, such as the captain's hat, the last Amera's baptismal bottle, a signed life preserver, the nautical chart and much more were auctioned. According to the shipping company, both actions brought in a total of 41.788,01 euros. The amount is paid out to the crew members.

The Bonn-based cruise operator flew 200 Philippines to Manila on a Condor charter flight today. More flights will follow in the next few days. Crew members from other nations such as Indonesians and Ukrainians are already on their way home.

  • The regular Norway operation of the post ships will be paused until May 20, 2020. The first scheduled departure will start on May 21 with MS Vesterålen from Bergen. To supply the Norwegian population, Hurtigruten is using two ships in a changed domestic timetable. The MS Richard With and MS Vesterålen bring important deliveries and goods to the communities on the Norwegian coast, which have been severely affected by the travel restrictions.
  • All Hurtigruten expedition trips will be suspended until May 12, 2020.
  • In addition, the Hurtigruten expedition season in Alaska will not begin until July 2020 due to new travel restrictions by the Canadian authorities.

The three market-defining cruise companies Carnival, Royal Caribbean and NCL are suffering severely from the corona pandemic. Carnival, the world's largest cruise operator, has been hit particularly hard by the crisis. The German operator Aida Cruises is part of the Carnival Group. Since the beginning of the year, the price of Carnival shares had plummeted by more than 80 percent. The Saudi State Fund acquired its stake at a bargain price.

MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam are allowed to call at Fort Lauderdale

Both Holland America Line ships were allowed to call at Port Everglades. The port near Fort Lauderdale is the end of a nightmare voyage that began on March 7th in Buenos Aires / Argentina and which was scheduled to end on March 21st in San Antonio / Chile. Because of many flu-like symptoms among passengers and crew members, the MS Zaandam was forbidden to call at San Antonio, to disembark the ship's guests and to take new guests on board.

The shipping company speaks of 107 guests and 143 crew members showing flu-like symptoms.

MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam are in front of Fort Lauderdale

The hanging game of the two Holland America Line cruise ships MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam doesn't want to end. Although US President Donald Trump had announced support for the wandering ships, it appears that Florida's Republican Governor Ronald DeSantis is not yet ready to allow the ships to enter Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale). The US Coast Guard refuses to allow either ship to enter US waters. Four elderly passengers died of the corona virus on board the MS Zaandam. 189 passengers on the ship suffer from respiratory diseases.

 Voucher regulations come under criticism

Apparently the federal government is planning to compensate travelers for canceled flights and package tours with vouchers. In times of the corona crisis, the reimbursement obligation would put a heavy strain on the liquidity of the organizers. The Federation of German Consumer Organizations criticizes these regulations demanded by industry representatives. So far, customers have been reimbursed cash for canceled flights and trips. The consumer advocates perceive the considerations to secure the airlines and tour operators as "an irresponsible social hardship for people with low incomes".
