October 12, 2024 – Hapag-Lloyd’s expedition ship HANSEATIC spirit is now sending a clear signal for the decarbonization of the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet. The ship bunkered 100 percent biofuel produced from waste residues for the first time in Amsterdam. It then passed the test for the global shore power connection in Hamburg
On the road to sustainability, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' expedition class ships have been using "Marine Gasoil 2020 percent" since 0,1, a particularly low-sulfur fuel. In addition, the sister ship HANSEATIC inspiration successfully tested a mixture of 2022 percent biofuel and marine gasoil for the first time in 30. Compared to fossil fuels, this certified biofuel, obtained from cooking oil residues, reduced CO2emissions by up to 90 percent. In addition, the exhaust air contains hardly any sulfur oxides. Environmentally friendly second-generation biofuel produced from residual and waste materials is now available. The HANSEATIC spirit is now equipped to run on this fuel.

A further step towards the environmental compatibility of ships is the use of shore power. The expedition ship was successfully tested for shore power at the Hamburg Cruise Center Altona. In addition to the EUROPA 2 and the HANSEATIC nature, the HANSEATIC spirit is now able to obtain shore power worldwide after being tested by a classification society.

However, according to the shipping company, there are fewer than 30 shore power systems available worldwide. Shore power supply has so far been established mainly in North America, China and Europe.
