As part of the Carnival Green Cruising concept, it is one of three ships ordered from the MEYER shipyard group and is operated 100 percent with LNG (liquefied natural gas). MEYER WERFT has an anniversary in common with the P&O IONA. She is the 50th cruise ship from the Papenburg shipyard. The P&O IONA begins to undock around midnight. After undocking, the ship will dock at the dockyard's equipment pier around 3:30am There it receives its chimney cladding. The ship will remain in the shipyard until the river Ems overpass, which is expected to take place at the end of March. In the meantime, the interior fittings will be completed and technical tests of the on-board systems will take place.

Before the maneuver, the floating part of the Odyssey of the Seas, a ship of the Royal Caribbean Quantum class, currently lying at the equipment quay, will be moved to another berth in the shipyard. After the IONA has undocked, the floating part is maneuvered into the free building dock II for further construction. The completion of this cruise ship is planned for autumn 2020. The front part of the Odyssey of the Seas has already been built in block construction in the hall in recent months.
