MV Werften buy construction capacities

January 18, 2019 - The Rostock company Neptun Ship Design is taken over by MV Werften. The largest German ship design office with 120 employees is to provide construction services for the MV Werftenverbund as an independent subsidiary in the future.

MV Werften, with locations in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund, is a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Genting Group. In addition to general tourist activities, it owns several Asian cruise brands. The company also holds a significant stake in the US Norwegian Cruise Line Holding. Genting sees the East German company as a strategic investment. It will initially build ships for the Group's own cruise brands.

At the Wismar and Rostock locations, the construction of a 2018 GT Global class cruise ship began. Several of these 342 meter long and 46,40 meter wide ships are to be built. The passenger capacities of the state-of-the-art megaliners are each over 5.000.

In addition, MV Werften build river cruise ships and three expedition mega yachts. With this level of utilization there was probably a need for additional construction capacities. In the future, these will be provided by Neptun Ship Design. We have already worked closely together in the past. The acquired constructors and designers are mainly used for the basic design of new ship projects. The purchase agreement was signed on January 16, 2019 in Wismar. The transaction still requires the approval of the antitrust authorities. Details on the structure of the transaction and the purchase price were not disclosed.
