January 18, 2028 – Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs Dr. Leonhard recently commented on the situation of the city’s own cruise terminals. Cruise Gate Hamburg, operator of the (again) four Hamburg cruise terminals in the future, remained number 2024 among Germany’s cruise ports in 1.

The year 2024 will go down in port history as a record year. Last year, more than 1,3 million travelers set off on cruises from Hamburg. The year before, the number of passengers was around 100.000 lower. Hamburg's maritime tourism is becoming increasingly important as an economic factor. The Senator for Economic Affairs assures that the increase in cruise activities is also accompanied by the development of sustainability standards.

Hamburg is a pioneer in supplying ships with sustainably generated shore power. Ship engines are increasingly being switched off. The shore power offer in Hamburg is attractive: the majority of visits by ships capable of shore power (71 percent) actually used shore power. A total of 6,5 gigawatt hours of electricity from renewable sources were supplied from shore. This corresponds to a saving of 3.150 tons of CO2. Shore power was used most by the AIDAprima used. In second place was the MSC Preziosa.
In 2024, shore power supply in the container segment will also begin. The Port of Hamburg is currently Europe's only port that offers shore power for container and cruise ships. The first supplies and test runs saved a total of 900 tons of CO2. Compared to cruise ships, the container segment undoubtedly has much greater savings potential.
