Anthem of the Seas

The cruise boom creates jobs

April 17, 2018 - The Italian Costa Group, part of the world's largest cruise company Carnival, is banking on increasing bookings. In 2017, 2,2 million Germans went on cruises. If the expectations of the Costa Group are met, six million Germans will take a cruise in 2030.

The predicted development opens up new job opportunities on land and on board the cruise ships. Because the industry not only needs service staff in the hotel sector, but also kindergarten teachers and technology experts. Not to mention ship officers.

We are also looking for employees for on-board shops, sports and spa facilities. Daniela Fahr, managing director of Connect, Agency for the placement of specialists and executives for cruise ships and private yachts, explains: “There are significantly more vacancies than applicants. With the large and ever increasing demand, it is becoming more and more difficult for shipping companies to find crew members for all positions on board ”. Career changers are therefore welcome on board cruise ships. Thanks to new offers on board the ships, which are still growing, new professional fields are increasingly emerging: For example, more employees are being hired for entertainment and technology, as well as photographers and kindergarten teachers.

Daniela Fahr adds: “Switching to a ship immediately after completing your training is an option that can greatly accelerate your later professional career. Especially in the hotel area of the ships, the opportunities for professional development are very good ”.

No wonder: 75 new cruise ships alone will be launched on the market by 2022. The number requires a minimum of 100.000 new crew members. And the demand will continue to grow. This is good news when the whole world is rightly thinking about the automated work processes of Industry 4.0.
