April 26, 2018 - Yesterday TUI Cruises took over the new flagship Mein Schiff 1 in the Finnish port city of Turku. Only a few days ago the "old" Mein Schiff 1 was released from the TUI Cruises fleet. The Hamburg cruise line is celebrating the new Mein Schiff 1 as a new generation of ships. The number two in the German cruise market has set itself the goal of having one of the most modern and environmentally friendly fleets in the world by 2020.
The ship was built by the MEYER TURKU shipyard in Finland. Wybcke Meier (CEO TUI Cruises) and CFO Frank Kuhlmann took over the new building at an official ceremony. It turned out to be significantly larger than the one that was taken over in 2017 Mein Schiff 6. According to the shipyard, the new flagship is 315 meters long, 36 meters wide and measured at 111.500 GT. The number of cabins is estimated at 1.437. The ship is made for a maximum of 3.132 passengers. A total of 1.092 crew members ensure the well-being of the guests.

The optical feature is the 35 meter wide diamond on the stern of the ship. The measures taken for environmental protection are much more important. The shipping company emphasizes that TUI ships, and especially the new Mein Schiff 1, are front runners when it comes to reducing emissions. Efficient technologies in the hotel sector ensure economical use of fuel, energy and water.

As one of the first cruise lines to feature Mein Schiff 1 via catalytic converters for the main and auxiliary machines. The catalytic converters help reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Important: As a result of a package of measures, my ship 1 consumes more than a third less energy than comparable ships. Two sister ships of the new ship class will be put into operation in 2019 (Mein Schiff 2) and in 2023 (Mein Schiff 7).

Mein Schiff 1 will honor the port of Kiel for the first time on April 27, 2018. A name change has been announced for the previous Mein Schiff 2. With the introduction of the new Mein Schiff 2 in the TUI Cruises fleet in 2019, a new name is needed. Because the old Mein Schiff 2 will remain in the fleet until 2022 due to capacity reasons. In TUI-speaking it sounds like this: "The Mein Schiff 2 is one of the cornerstones of our success and staying in the fleet is a matter close to our hearts". Therefore Mein Schiff 2 is renamed “Mein Schiff Herz”. That goes to the heart!
