Heligoland is Germany's only offshore island. At the time of the Hanseatic League, Heligoland was a feared location for pirates. Today, Heligoland is a well-known seaside resort and a bird paradise. The seabirds nest on the 60 meter high cliffs of the rocky island.

Worth seeing is the Lange Anna, a steep rock that split off from the red cliffs at the western tip of the island in the mid-19th century. Also worth seeing is the dune, Heligoland's bathing paradise. The Börteboote, with which visitors to the island take tours, are well known. In addition to the diverse birdlife of the offshore island, gray seals and common seals are real eye-catchers. And one more thing: Heligoland is a duty-free zone. Fashion, jewellery, perfumery and alcohol are exempt from VAT on Heligoland. Among Germany's islands, Heligoland is a very special highlight.
