Karl WP Beyer The cruise ship Celebrity Millennium was the first in a series of four ships Millennium class built. The for Royal Caribbean group belonging Celebrity Cruises put it into service in July 2000.
The ships of the Millennium class are significantly smaller in terms of tonnage and their guest capacities than those of the Solstice class introduced afterwards. That does not mean that these ships appear less comfortable than the larger ship units. As part of several facelifts, adjustments to the standards of the Solstice class were made. Further costly improvement measures are planned in the near future as part of a campaign that will affect the entire fleet.

Cabins & Suites
The deck plan of the Millennium shows a total of 1.079 cabins; with double occupancy this results in 2.158 guests. All standard cabins in the categories inside, outside and balcony are tastefully and practically furnished. They offer enough space; this also applies to the wet rooms. The level of performance increases significantly from the Concierge Class balcony cabin category.

The cabin service, as befits premium ships, takes place twice a day. The stewards are friendly and inconspicuous. They are well trained, courteous and see themselves as service providers.

As usual on cruise ships, the Celebrity Millennium distinguishes between restaurants that are included in the price and those that are subject to a surcharge. That is what guests of Aqua-Class are Blue reserved, and suite guests dine exclusively in the Luminae.

The Metropolitan main restaurant
The spacious Metropolitan, located aft on decks 4 and 5, is extremely representative. It is open during the three main meals. In the evening it is the most important restaurant on board the Millennium. Then the dinner is served in two sessions. A section of the restaurant on deck 4 is reserved for those guests who want to Select dining variant prefer the fixed meal times with flexible access to the dining room.

The background noise, a frequently occurring weak point in large ship restaurants, is tolerable even when it is fully occupied.
The menu changes constantly. It is varied, decoratively presented and extremely tasty. Even at full capacity, the service staff work competently and quickly.

The Oceanview Cafe
In general, the Oceanview buffet restaurant located aft on deck 10 is in high demand for breakfast and lunchtime. Its self-service stations are sensibly arranged around the central kitchen and designed twice in heavily frequented sections. There are practically no queues. There is also a pasta and pizza station. In another department, the dishes are freshly prepared in front of the guests.

A particular advantage of the Oceanview Café is the spacious, partially shaded outdoor area. It makes it possible to take food and drinks outdoors in warm regions.

The AquaSpa Café
The ship's two pools are on the 10th deck. The guests in the AquaSpa Café quench their hunger and thirst in between without having to leave the deck. The snacks offered are healthy and tasty.

With the quality offered by the main restaurants, there is no need for any other restaurants. Sport, fitness & wellness
When it comes to sports, the main activities are ball games (deck 12 aft), running and swimming. All three sports are practiced on the two upper decks. The short jogging track is on the 11th deck.
The Outdoor pool and the four whirlpools are centrally located on deck 10.

The fully glazed one adjoining the outdoor pool Solarium with pool and two whirlpools is reserved for adults, more precisely people aged 16 and over. They enjoy the peace and quiet and comfortable loungers with thick cushions.

The sunbathing areas on decks 10 and 12 are generously dimensioned. However, our favorite for undisturbed sunbathing is the boat deck (deck 4). Loungers were placed on both sides of the wide and spacious deck area. The deck under the lifeboats is also often used as a runway. Unfortunately, the Millennium does not offer a circular route like some other ships do.

The one located aft on the 12th deck is of more recent origin Roof terrace. The deck area is furnished with outdoor lounge furniture and offers a large video screen. "Movies under the Stars" are shown at certain times.

The Spa and Gym on deck 10 is from Canyon Ranch, the renowned operator of wellness centers. Canyon Ranch also maintains spa facilities on board the Queen Mary 2 as well as on Oceania and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships. All imaginable treatments and therapies are offered. Nobody has to do without an acupuncture studio (deck 7).

The Gym is large and well equipped with equipment. There are also gymnastics areas. The sports area takes up almost the entire width of the ship.

As usual on cruise ships, the entertainment programs run from early morning until late at night. Regardless of whether it is about lectures about upcoming destinations, wine presentations by the head sommelier, art auctions or special sales, the Liar's Club, karaoke competitions or the "Officers Challenge" in the on-board casino, there is a grateful audience for everything.

The center of on-board entertainment is the three-story On-board theater. The look behind the scenes that we are offered proves that the technical equipment is state of the art. Sufficient space is available to the actors. The singers and dancers go through a strict selection process and a two-month training course before their engagements in Miami. All artists, including the musicians, are experienced and skilled; Guest artists regularly complete the entertainment offer.

In addition to the Cosmos Lounge on deck 11, children and adolescents can enjoy the Kids Clubadding Fun Factory and in the X lounge their little freedoms. Careful supervision is ensured. Access to this area is only granted to registered persons.

The one facing the center of the ship should be emphasized Grand Foyer. The three-storey atrium on deck 3 houses guest relations, the excursion office and the contact point for the Captain's Club. The crew deserves a special mention. The polite guest service staff do an exemplary job. They always put a smile on their hard work. The guests experience an extremely courteous, personal service.
We had contact with the senior officers at various events. Only positive things can be said about their dealings with passengers. The highlight among the officers is Captain Alex Papadopoulos. The youngest “master” of the Celebrity Cruises fleet is, like many of his colleagues, a native of Greece. His daily reports from the bridge are both informative and amusing.

When disembarking, the captain and the cruise director don't mind saying goodbye to the guests with a handshake and with friendly words. Respect!
Route and cabin
We traveled from Hong Kong to Singapore on the Millennium in February 2018. Stopovers were Vietnam and Thailand. During the trip there were several overnight stays. On board the Millennium we lived in balcony cabin 7039.

The ship
The pleasant cabin design and the attractive, spacious public areas of the Millennium, designed with high-quality materials and interesting art objects, make a premium ship. In the 18th year after its commissioning, the visual condition of the public areas and the cleanliness on board are exemplary.
The gastronomy
The gastronomic services of the restaurants, bars and lounges as well as the service offered confirm that the guest has made the "right" choice with Celebrity Cruises and especially with the Celebrity Millennium.

Compared to the Solstice class ships, the Millennium has more attractive bars and lounges to our liking.
The crew
All crew members with guest contact make the guest's stay on board as pleasant as possible. This also includes the friendly smile, the ice-cold towels, the soft drinks and the "Welcome back on board" greeting with which returning guests are greeted on board.
criticisms:
The Millennium looks great in public areas. The real age of the ship is shown in the cabin area. In the passage area to the balcony and on the balcony there are clear signs of wear and rust. The bathroom also needs a general renovation.
Celebrity Cruises regularly use multilingual information material to indicate that the reservation of loungers is not accepted. However, loungers are reserved for hours. On the other hand, too little is done by the "pool butlers".
During the 14-day voyage, there were two unexpected, massive problems with disembarkation procedures in standard situations.
Conclusion:
We really enjoyed our stay on board the Celebrity Millennium. Celebrity Millennium is an attractive cruise ship despite its age. Compared to many newer ships, it is also pleasant to look at. The shipping company and Millennium can be recommended at any time as high-quality cruise products. If the route was interesting for us, we would take another cruise with the Celebrity Millennium at any time.
