Mein Schiff 4 - rating

The route

7 nights Canary Islands with Morocco

Course of the route: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Agadir / Morocco, Arrecife / Lanzarote, Santa Cruz / Tenerife, San Sebastian / La Gomera, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

We saw individual areas of the ship on the occasion of its christening in June 2015. The Canary Islands cruise now offered us the opportunity to Mein Schiff 4 to get to know intensively.

Our rating of the Mein Schiff 4

With Mein Schiff 4 TUI Cruises presents, similar to the almost identical one Mein Schiff 3, optically a successful and very attractive new building. With regard to its “inner” values, the ship is state-of-the-art. The shipping company and the designers attached particular importance to energy efficiency, emission reduction and resource conservation.

TUI Cruises defines the four current cruise ships as "feel-good ships". Even if we perceive the use of the term “feel-good ship” as trite, it must be noted that there is little that is serious about the cruise ship.

One after the other: The check-in went smoothly, friendly and quickly despite a long queue. The booked balcony cabin turned out to be spacious and comfortable and the inevitable sea rescue exercise was less soporific than we were used to from most other cruise ships.

The public spaces have clearly gained in flair compared to the first two ships in the fleet. The predominant sober, Scandinavian style should be emphasized. All of the restaurants we tested consistently offer a remarkably high quality of food.

The diverse and excellent Sport & SPA offers also deserve recognition. The varied entertainment and edutainment offers are varied and sophisticated. Families traveling with children and young people can rely on the fact that their offspring are well looked after.

According to our observations, the following weaknesses do not really fit into the picture of the ideal TUI cruise world:

  • Our trip fell during the holiday season of some federal states. There were around 300 children and young people on board. It cannot be understood that the very pleasant indoor pool area of the ship intended for relaxation has been converted into a children's and family area. Guests who wanted to relax in the area found no rest there during the entire trip.

  • It is also noticeable that underage children were allowed to roam the ship unhindered around 22:30pm unaccompanied by an adult.

  • On Mein Schiff 4 deck loungers with towels were reserved for hours without guests using the loungers. We already experienced this bad habit on Mein Schiff 1. There the captain at the time considered it appropriate to regularly remind people that deck chairs are common property.

None of that should be. On board ships from other premium brands, we are thinking, for example, of the Group's half-sister Celebrity Cruises, we have learned that those responsible will not tolerate such occurrences.

The renowned Berlitz Cruising & Cruise Ships Guide evaluated as part of its 31st edition in the Group of large ships Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4 even before Cunard's Queen Mary 2 with four Berlitz stars. Both top positions do not really fit in with the very different service standards in the restaurants, bars and lounges that were determined during our trip.

On the one hand, we met competent, highly motivated employees who worked quickly and efficiently. On the other hand, we were confronted with bored, disinterested carelessness. The waiting times in the restaurants, but especially in the bar areas, are sometimes unbearably long. We asked ourselves how it can be done that a waitress could "chat" with guests for 10 minutes in a fully occupied bar without a supervisor intervening. We also asked ourselves why tables that had become vacant were not quickly cleared. The list of shortcomings could be continued.

To really “feel good”, the service staff still needs some training. Apart from these weak points, we enjoyed our stay on board the Mein Schiff 4. The cruise ship, which was only launched in mid-2015, is optically in excellent condition and offers a respectable cruise experience.

Our trip in January / February was supported by TUI Cruises. We thank you for this. With regard to our journalistic independence, we refer to the chapter "We are independent".
