Karl WP Beyer November 22, 2022 - With 280 ship calls, Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH (CGH) reports the strongest season in Hamburg's cruise history. More than 750.000 passengers are expected to pass through the cruise terminals by the end of the year. Other passengers arrived on 41 river boats.
In the current year, the CGH recorded the best season ever. The 280 calls by ocean-going cruise ships are expected to require more than 750.000 passengers. The port reports 49 different cruise ships, ten of which called at the port of Hamburg for the first time. In 2019, the year before Corona, only 210 ships were counted. For 2023, the port administration expects 284 ship calls. In addition, 37 river cruise ships can be assumed.
Cruise Terminal Altona
Two important dates: From May 5th to 7th, 2023, the Port of Hamburg will be celebrating its 834th birthday. The Hamburg Cruise Days will take place from September 8th to 10th, 2023.
Cruise Terminal Steinwerder
The Port of Hamburg attaches particular importance to sustainability. In 2016, Europe's first shore power system was put into operation at the Altona cruise terminal. According to current plans, the Cruise Center Steinwerder will supply cruise ships with “green electricity” for the first time in the second half of 2023 while they are at berth. The Cruise Center HafenCity, which is currently under construction, is expected to be connected to the grid for the 2025 season. The Hamburg Port Authority emphasizes that from 2025 it will be one of the first ports in Europe to offer shore power supply at the berth for both cruise ships and container ships. The Altona shore power plant was used for 30 starts in the year just ended for external power supply. In addition, four ships undertook integration tests. Integration tests for twelve ships are expected in 2023. Ships are only certified for regular use of the shore power system during lay times after all integration tests have been successfully completed.
