Draws the line under the season AIDAprima. It will call at Kiel for the last time on Saturday, October 12, 2019. A total of 174 ship calls for Kiel reported. In the previous year there were 169. Exactly 32 different cruise ships used the berths in the port. The total tonnage rose from 11,5 million GT in 2018 to 15 million GT in the current year. This corresponds to an increase of 30 percent. Compared to previous years, the port succeeded in tying larger shipping units to the Hanseatic city. This contributed to the fact that the number of passengers increased significantly. For the first time, more than 800.000 cruise passengers (+ 33,6%) boarded or disembarked. The port's plans were exceeded. The port administration explains that the cruise and ferry passengers and their crews spend more than 75 million euros in Kiel and the surrounding area.
SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG is participating in the expanded cruise terminal in the Ostuferhafen, which opened in April. It increases the port's capacity and flexibility. According to the port administration, very large ships with more than 4.000 passengers can be handled smoothly there.
New Mein Schiff 2
The construction of the second terminal building at Ostseekai will be completed next year. In addition, the most powerful shore power system in a German port is being built there. When it comes to sustainability, Kiel sees itself as one of the most environmentally friendly ports in Europe. In the first full year of operation, 60 to 70 cruise calls and the Stena Line ferries are supplied with shore power. As a result, around 12.000 tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) are saved.
